The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Agriculture gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Agriculture sector while still in high school. The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, university and the work place. The Agri-Food Industry, representing 1 in 8 Canadian jobs, is drastically increasing the need to feed the world. Global demand will require 70% more food by 2050 and Canada will help fill that demand. Ontario has more than half the ‘class 1’ farmland available in our country and has about 158,000 people associated with the industry.

The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, university and work. The Construction Industry is diverse and offers the opportunity to participate in all kinds of projects such as office buildings, plants, schools, roads, hydroelectric dams, hospitals, churches, houses and tunnels. Large or small, the projects are managed, budgeted for, planned and built carefully and capably by people with the ingenuity, skill and education to create.

The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, community, university and the workplace. Automobiles, wood products, petroleum and coal products, iron and steel mills, primary metals and fabricated metal products, electricity, plastics and rubber products, printing, biotechnology, textiles, clothing, and leather products are all aspects of the manufacturing sector. In Ontario, the manufacturing sector still accounts for the greatest number of jobs with its production of consumer and industrial goods that are essential for the province’s prosperity.

The Environment is an emerging sector in our world as we continue to expect a clean and safe environment to live in that is essential for our health and quality of life. As such, the government and other organizations have launched various programs to protect our air, water and land resources. The environment sector offers career opportunities in conservation, research, recreation, innovation and more to students who are interested in this field.

The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, community, university and the workplace. The demand for professionals in the Health and Wellness sector in Ontario and across Canada is increasing as the age of our population increases. As such, this sector has both a wide variety of career opportunities and employs close to 2 million people across Canada. Kinesiologist, child care worker, fitness instructor, doctor, nurse, veterinary technician, hospital porter and medical technician are just some of the numerous occupations that the SHSM Health and Wellness program prepares students to pursue.

Horticulture and Landscaping

The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, community, university and the workplace. The Horticulture and Landscaping sector offers plenty of career opportunities and the experience of working outside with nature, earning potential with the proper training and skills, lots of variety and a job that helps the environment. In the industry, professionals design, construct, install, grow, plant and maintain landscapes, features and gardens. They also work in a variety of places, in nurseries, golf courses, as contractors, in education and research, parks and recreation and many other settings.

Tourism in Ontario is a dynamic, growing sector. Prospects for satisfying employment and career advancement in the hospitality industry have never been better, locally and world-wide.

Information and Communications Tech.
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Information and Communications Technology sectors while still in high school. The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, community, university and the workplace. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is increasingly becoming an essential part of many industries. There are requirements to save time and increase efficiency, advance technology and innovation, for electronic access to finances or online shopping, creativity, marketing, and communications. ICT includes both the hardware and information technology skills, as well as the creative, communications and graphic arts expertise.

Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Community and Emergency Services sectors while still in high school. The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, community, university and the workplace. Events such as the 1998 ice storm, “Y2K”, September 11, 2001 (9/11), the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) outbreak, and the August 2003 blackout have raised public and government recognition of the vital role of Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services in ensuring the safety of Ontarians. Ontario now has some of the most rigorous community safety legislation in North America, and since 9/11, governments, NGOs, and private enterprise have all greatly enhanced their efforts to ensure the public’s safety and security. With these efforts have come various new programs and significant staffing increases within the sector.

The Social Justice sector offers a range of careers that are dynamic, engaging, and rewarding. Whether in the fields of art, culture, education, the environment, information technology, healthcare, social development, or sport, countless career paths are available for people who share the sector’s common vision: to make a difference. The sector’s employers include some 69,000 non-profit organizations nationwide. They are active in a variety of areas – health and social services, religion, development and housing, arts and culture, sports and recreation, the environment, education and research, fundraising, and law, advocacy, and politics – both in Canada and internationally.

Transportation

Transportation is essential to our everyday life. Different modes of transportation include air, rail, road, water, cable, pipeline and space, which provide many career options for those interested in the field. Skilled automotive service technicians, who need to know the basics of everything from seat-belt systems to the latest diagnostic equipment, are in great demand, although the transportation industry offers many other opportunities.

Auto Body, Collision and Refinishing
The Auto Body OYAP focuses on both Collision Damage Repair Technician and Automotive Painter. It is a program specifically designed to help students make a smooth successful transition from high school directly into their post-secondary Auto Body and Collision Damage Repair Technician apprenticeship. It is also the best course offered in our high schools to prepare students for a career as an Automotive Painter apprentice. The OYAP Auto Body / Collision Repair Program focuses on: Repairing and replacing automotive panels, proper refinishing and re-painting techniques, proper surface preparation, gaining an understanding of various auto design structures, proper health and safety techniques, the use of industry standard equipment and new technologies (waterborne paint), and developing employability skills Similar apprenticeship preparation certificate programs are also offered at local community colleges which can cost $2,500 or more.

Cabinetmaking / Carpentry
The Carpenter/Cabinet Maker concentrated OYAP is a program specifically designed to help students make a smooth successful transition from high school directly into their post-secondary education general carpenter, cabinetmaker apprenticeship. The program consists of residential framing, rafter layout, blueprint reading, safe use of stationary and portable equipment, interior finishing and trim. The cabinetmaker course also offers CAD, CNC router table training and cabinet construction. Similar Apprenticeship preparation certificate programs are also offered at local community colleges, and private technical training centres. They can cost between $2,500 and $6,000 at these other sites. Student's now can now go through the PLAR process with the MTCU in order to be granted their level 1 Carpentry course at MM Robinson or at Georgetown District High School.

Electrical
The Electrical Concentrated OYAP is a program specifically designed to help students make a smooth successful transition from high school directly into their post-secondary education Electrician apprenticeship. Similar apprenticeship preparation certificate programs are also offered at local community colleges, and private technical training centres. They can cost between $2,500 and $8,700 at these other sites. This program is offered at M.M. Robinson High School. The program has a 90% employment rate for students who have completed the program. The program has industry standard equipment.

Hairstylist
The Hairstylist Concentrated OYAP is a program specifically designed to help students make a smooth successful transition from high school directly into their post-secondary Hairstylist apprenticeship. This course will also introduce students to a career in Aesthetics. Similar apprenticeship preparation certificate programs are also offered at local community colleges, and private technical training centres. The cost for training can range up to $20,000 at some private academies.

Welder
Welder Concentrated OYAP is a program specifically designed to help students make a smooth successful transition from high school directly into their post-secondary Welder / Welder Fitter apprenticeship. The student will learn the following welding processes: Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG), Shielded Arc Welding (Stick) and plasma cutting. Similar apprenticeship preparation certificate programs are also offered at local community colleges, and private technical training centres. They can cost between $2,500 and $6,000 at these other sites.
