FIRST Robotics

In the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC), high-school students team up with the world’s best technology companies to build the most impressive robots you’ve ever seen. Built from scratch in only 6 weeks, these 5 foot tall, 140 pound robots compete in high intensity robo-sports. With bragging rights at stake for schools and the companies that support them, robotics takes on a pro-sports experience. “The varsity sport for the mind,” FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against competitors. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. The HDSB Currently has 10 FIRST Robotics teams. Some robotics teams are also associated with SHSM programs and Dual Credit Programs. For Information on Robotics programs, contact your guidance counsellor or the guidance office of the participating school.

College Dual Credit

The School College Work Initiative (SCWI) is a partnership between school boards and colleges that allows senior secondary school students to simultaneously earn secondary school credits towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and a college diploma or Level 1 apprenticeship training. The programs run either in the secondary school or college setting and allow students to reach ahead into a potential future education in the apprenticeship or college pathways. Dual Credit programs are designed for students who face challenges in completing the requirements for graduation and show the potential to succeed in college. These students may also be in Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs or the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP). Our College Partners for Dual Credit Programs are Humber College, Mohawk College, Seneca College and Sheridan College.
